Professor Grey walked into the classroom, her presence like magic spellbinding students into observation- a feat among the extraordinary. She stood before some of the brightest witches, warlocks, and alchemists in the world. She should feel intimidated, but she wasn’t. All beings had to take her class to advance any further, whether they slept through it or excelled. In addition, she found purpose in teaching the important skill of emotional intelligence to the next generation of magic bearers even if she couldn’t wield magic herself. This class was put into place to help curb magical wars and disputes.
When her teaching assistant took a seat, Professor Grey began her lesson. Ashley Hollows was a quiet, shy pyromancer, but she always followed Professor Grey to her office engaging her in topics on the philosophy and ethics of magic.
“Magic feeds on emotion.” Professor Grey’s voice was clear and loud. “Do you ever wander what happens when sadness distorts a healing spell or anger poisons a protection spell? Do you think about the emotions you are channeling when spell casting?”
The air thickened with clouds of tension and reflection. “Understanding yourself is the building block to utilizing your true power and potential.” Professor Grey’s eyes rested on Ashley. “In this class, we will learn how to identify emotions, communicate, and hone intent with calm and precision.”
When class was over, Ashley approached Professor Grey, who sighed and slouched in her chair. “Thank goodness that’s over.”
“You did great as always.”
“I just hope I’m making a difference here.”
Ashley lay her hand on Professor Grey’s hand and said with a kind frown, “Of course you are!” Realizing what she had done, she quickly retracted her hand, looking a bit flushed. If not for her brown skin, she would’ve revealed a deep blush. She hurried over to the door and said as she glanced over her shoulder, “As a child of war-torn parents, we definitely need classes like this. It’s important to know the darkness that magic can leave behind.”
Professor Grey smiled.
