Warmth abandoned Teddy's furry body. She stirred. She patted the empty bed side, each pat becoming more frantic as her stuffing snapped cold. She bolted upright to see the covers pushed aside and no child.

"Kayla?" Her voice trembled in the darkness as she hopped off the bed. She grabbed her bat she used to fight the monster living under the bed and cautiously wandered towards the light emanating from the long mirror on the inside of the creaky door. The light had a pulsing, sinister look about it.

Long limbs uncurled from the bed, eyes at the end of each tendril blinking. "The light took her."

"And you just let it?" Teddy yelled, waving her bat.

The monster growled, but then stared as if examining Teddy. "I thought it might be another entity; I thought it might be like me."

Teddy groaned, sighed, and shook her head. "I need to go get her."

"You'll need help," the monster replied.

"Why should I trust you? All you do is scare her."

"You have no idea what you're dealing with, Fluff-for-Brains."

"Oh and you do, you bed lurker?" Teddy challenged as she raised her bat as if to battle for another night.

"I have a place here. You want to protect her with just a hug? If not, you'll need to trust me."

"Help!" A muffled scream broke echoed.

"I suppose we'll have to put our differences aside for now," Teddy said quickly. "Alright?"

"Ok."

"You try anything funny, I'll bust your head open."

The monster smiled, showing too many teeth. "You can try like always."

They exchanged glances after another muffled scream and tore off into the light.

They found the child and the light attempting to feed off her. Teddy swung her bat and the monster used her claws to subdue the light. When Teddy freed the child, she held her close.

When they crossed back to the bedroom, Teddy tucked the child into bed and kissed her forehead. Teddy gazed into the monster's eyes, and felt a different kind of warmth- a spark- something between them had changed. Teddy set the baseball bat against her shoulder and gave a shy smile. "So, I'll see you tomorrow?"

The too-many-teeth smiled appeared, but it was less derisive. "I'll be waiting."
